Tahsan on his new Sufi inspired band

Tahsan has made a space for himself in the hearts of many with his wonderful lyrics and melodious music. He is not only a brilliant musician but also an actor and a teacher. Recently, the Dhaka Tribune caught up with the multitalented star to talk about his newly formed band:

Please tell us about your upcoming band Tahsan and the Sufis

I have been singing for the last ten to twelve years. At this point, I have realized my ambition to reach the masses through my music. I want to bring a change in my regular style and do something different. Besides, I have performed many love songs which were loved by my fans. Now, I want to have the real substance of spiritualism. I have been inspired by reading many Sufi books. Also, I realised that many of my songs carried notions of philosophy and spiritualism. I would like to state that the lineup of my band Tahsan and the Sufis is already set, featuring Tanveer as lead guitarist, Shishir on drums and Sunny as a bassist.

Why particularly Sufi?

Sufi is not a genre. It can be played in various styles and melodies, and can be qawali or rock affiliated. Sufi songs give more emphasis on lyrics. Sufism has a philosophy of harmony. I am exploring myself in this new world, along with my band members.

When is the album coming?

We launched our first song “Jiggesh Korechcho” on our Facebook page in the first week of July. The song was free to download for three days. In the first movement of the song, I have my signature style. The second movement is jazz progression based and the last movement has the diversity of Bangladesh’s rock flavour. Now, we are in the process of launching the album in two to three months. At present, the music business is more apt to promote potential musicians. Therefore, we will soon find a way to launch our very first Sufi album.

Do you miss Black?

Well, we are friends and we tend to hang out often. Once in a while we jam together.

You are a lecturer at a private university, and you also act. How do you manage?

It was harder at first. Now that a routine has been established, it is easier for me to multitask. I launch my music every two years, so that makes a pace. I act once a year, mostly in Eid special dramas. And teaching is a day job. I concentrate mostly on my teaching, but music is also a part of my life. Also, I make time to spend with my daughter.

Any celebs you admire?

I would like to watch David Gilmour, Mark Knopfler and Sting playing at a concert. Also, I would like to spend some time talking about music with the finest musicians.
