Thanchi upazila administration in Bandarban has closed tourism spots in the area for three months, citing dangerously rising water levels in local rivers during monsoon season.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Sheikh Abu Saleh said the decision was made after the tragic death of a student of Dhaka Medical College (DMC).
On June 15, DMC student Moinul Islam drowned after he accidently slipped and fell from the edge of a mountain bordering Nafakum waterfall.
A rescue team led by Border Guard Bangladesh recovered his body from the Pahari Jhiri area, around 0.5km away.
The executive officer said “The decision was made to avoid the risk of accidents. Travelling in aforesaid tourism spots is dangerous, as the water level of Sangu river rises during the monsoon.”
Sources said tourism spots in Tindu, Rematri and Boro Modok union will remain closed June 19 - September 30.
