Foreign secretary elects member of CMW

Foreign Secretary Md Shahidul Haque has got elected to the Committee on the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of their Families (CMW)

He bagged with 39 votes and this is the second highest number of votes bagged by any candidate at this election held in New York on Thursday, says a press release of the foreign ministry.

The secretary will serve as an independent expert in the committee.

Forty-six state parties to the International Convention of the rights of all Migrant Workers and Members of their Families (ICRMW) elected seven new experts for CMW in New York for three years from January next year. Bangladesh ratified the treaty on August 2011.

This is the first time Bangladesh becomes a members of CMW. This would add a further new dimension to Bangladesh’s efforts to protect and promote the rights of its around eight million migrant workers and their family members.

The CMW is a 14 member treaty body that monitors the ICRMW State parties’ adherence to this only human rights instruments for migrant workers, and also promotes the treaty for ratification by non-state parties.

Prior to taking up his assignment as the foreign secretary, Haque had a successful career with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and served as Director, International Cooperation and Partnership at the IOM Headquarters.
