Gowher: Water crisis to worsen

Water crisis is going to be one of the biggest crises that the country is going to face in the future, said Prime Minister’s International Affairs Adviser Gowher Rizvi yesterday.

Speaking at a discussion in the capital’s Brac Centre Inn, Rizvi said: “If we were to pinpoint the crises the country is likely to face in the days ahead, water would be the biggest.”

The discussion was on water Laws, directives from the High Court, good governance and way forward and was organised by legal service provider Brotee, where Rizvi was the chief guest.

Rizvi said: “Many civilisations have been destroyed due to lack of water. We are especially in danger because we do not yet have any concern about our environment.

“We have to prevent the misuse of water and conserve it. Lots of things should be worked out at many levels if we want to conserve water.” He also suggested changing the cropping pattern in the country.

The speakers further said several laws related to surface and ground water, wetlands and environment have been undertaken but remain far from being implemented.
