Tens of thousands rally in Sohagi murder protest

Tens of thousands of students of Comilla Victoria Government College took to the streets on Thursday, protesting the killing of Sohagi Jahan Tonu, a second-year student of History Department.

Some 30,000 students gathered at Kandirpar Pubali Chattar, located at the heart of the city, at 10am and continued their demonstration rally till 12:30pm.

The agitated students vowed to continue their demonstration until the rapists and killers of the theatre activist are brought under trial.

The protest, that was also joined by students of different educational institutions and cultural organisations, disrupted the traffic in the city.

The protesters later submitted memorandum to the deputy commissioner and the superintendent of police.

Imtiaz Ahmed, additional superintendent of police, and Officer-in-Charge of Kotwali Model police station Abdur Rob addressed the demonstration, and assured that the criminals would be identified soon.

Sohagi was sexually abused and murdered in the Comilla cantonment area on Sunday night when she was returning from a tuition. Her half naked body with smashed head was recovered later that night from inside the cantonment.

Her father filed a case with Kotwali Model police station. The incident has created a huge uproar around the country.

Several socio-cultural organisations have been staging demonstrations across the country protesting the killing.
