Case filed over Bangladesh Bank fund heist

A case has been filed over the cyber heist at Bangladesh's central bank last month that netted some $100 million.

Jubair Bin Huda, Bangladesh Bank joint director (Accounts and Budget) filed the case with Motijheel police station on Tuesday afternoon.

Confirming the news, Motijheel Zone Additional Deputy Commissioner Farid Uddin told the Dhaka Tribune: “The case has been filed under Money Laundering Prevention Act, accusing unknown persons."

The case documents have been forwarded to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further investigation, said the official.

According to the case statement, a total of 101 million dollars were illegally transferred from Bangladesh Bank fund against 35 payment instructions. Of the money, $20 million went to Sri Lanka while $81 million to the Philippines.

“The central bank has already received $19.93 million of the $20 million transferred to Sri Lanka while the remaining amount was deducted in transfer fees. Besides, only $68,000 remained in the bank account in the Philippines out of the $81 million,” added the case statement.

On February 4, hackers stole more than $101 million from Bangladesh Bank’s account with the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and wired it to a number of bank accounts in the Philippines and Sri Lanka.

On February 29, Philippines daily the Inquirer broke the story of a possible $100m digital bank robbery of the BB fund.

In the wake of the cyber heist, Atiur Rahman tendered his resignation as Bangladesh Bank governor to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the PMO on Tuesday morning.

Following Atiur's resignation, Fazle Kabir, who is serving Sonali Bank as chairman, has been made Bangladesh Bank governor.
