JU English department’s results worsen

The year final results of three consecutive batches of English department in Jahangirnagar University (JU) have worsened after the introduction of weekend masters programme.

Expressing concern over students’ results, teachers and students said the results had deteriorated due to the teachers’ irresponsibility.

Although teachers claimed that students had failed due to their inattentiveness about education, it was found that almost all teachers conducted classes in weekend masters programme while the results of weekend programme were outstanding than the regular students’ results.

Recently, the third year students’ results had published after 10 months since the examination held. Some 81 regular students attended in the examination and some 23 students failed in viva and other courses while some 20 students failed only in the viva voce.

The result of second year students have published after over eight months while 78 students out of 23 failed in more than one course and 15 students failed in the viva voce.

The results of first year honours students have published recently after eight months. Twenty seven students failed in that examination.

Meanwhile, results of weekend masters programme under winter-2015 have been published on February 2 while 100% students came out successful in examination and results published without any delay.

Students alleged that they had been discriminated inside the classroom as the teachers were more attentive towards the weekend students. Students said such deterioration of results was very unusual.

A third year student in the department asking anonymity told the Dhaka Tribune that most of the teachers are involved in weekend masters programme and, conduct class and examination on Friday and Saturday. Teachers remain busy in off days and frequently cancel our scheduled classes and examinations due to their personal affairs on working days.”

“We cannot protest of teachers’ tyrannies in the department as they have our tutorial and viva marks in their hands,” he laments.

Prof Ahmed Reza, chairman of third year examination committee in the department, said: “The students do not attend the classes and study properly. They read Indian notes instead of reading original texts in the syllabus.”
