Banglalink has shut down its headquarters and regional offices across the country in the face of demonstration over the termination of an engineer.
Ankit Sureka, assistant manager of Banglalink (PR), told the Dhaka Tribune that the management of the mobile phone operator has shut all regional offices along with its head office in the capital’s Gulshan area around 2pm yesterday.
He said:”The authorities have closed the offices only for today [Sunday].”
However, the customer care centres will remain open, he added.
“Hope, the crisis would be solved soon,” said Sureka.
The row between the management and the employees began on February 11 when the mobile phone authorities sacked an engineer, Shariful Islam, for his involvement in organising the trade union.
Earlier, on Thursday night, the employees confined Chief Technical Office (CTO) Perihane Elhamy to the headquarters over the row.
She was released nine hours after her confinement when police and the management assured the employees to look into the matter.
Ujjal Paul, president of Banglalink Employees’ Union, told the Dhaka Tribune: “We will continue the demonstration until Shariful Islam is reinstated.
“One of our employees is being treated in hospital after the human resources department has harassed him,” he added.
On January 29, a total 719 employees formed the Banglalink Employees’ Union. Later on February 7, the employees’ union declared its new committee.
