HC: Why no criminal case against Japan Bangladesh Hospital

The High Court has issued a rule asking why criminal case should not be filed against the authorities of Japan Bangladesh Friendship Hospital for allegedly keeping a baby's lifeless body on life support at the ICU, without notifying the family about her passing.

Health secretary, director general of health department, director general of drug administration and managing director of Japan Bangladesh Friendship Hospital were asked to respond to the rule within 10 days.

An HC bench of Justice Moazzem Hossain and Justice Bodruzzaman issued the suo-moto rule on Thursday afternoon.

The court also asked why order should not be given to give compensation the family members of the 16-month-old baby girl.

Of the respondents, drug administration DG and MD of Japan Bangladesh Friendship Hospital were asked to appear before the court on February 22.

The child, Sumaiya Sabah, was admitted to the hospital on Monday with breathing problems. She was immediately taken to the ICU, where she remained away from her family until she died.

However, the exact time of her death could not be known.

The mobile court was first notified by the child’s mother about the secretive role being played by the hospital staff.
