Bangladesh women continue dominance

Bangladesh women continued their dominance over their male compatriots in the 12th South Asian Games as the women’s football team registered its second consecutive victory beating Maldives 2-0 in Guwahati, India yesterday.

In contrast, Bangladesh Olympic team was held to a 1-1 draw by Bhutan in its opening match at SI Stadium in Guwahati yesterday. Bhutan took the lead in the 27th minute of the game before Nabib Newaj Jibon’s header off a Hemanta Vincent Biswas corner brought parity for the men in red and green.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh earned one more silver medal in the archery discipline on the fifth day of the event after winning two last Monday. The latest one came from the recurve mixed team event where Beauty Ray and Sojeb Sheik were beaten by the Indian team in the final. The men’s recurve team also won a bronze yesterday.

Two more bronze medals were won yesterday with Sonia Akter becoming third in the women’s 200m butterfly stroke and Jewel Ahmed finishing at the same position in the men’s 200m butterfly stroke. Both the men’s and women’s team in badminton won a bronze apiece in the team event yesterday.

In the meantime, Bangladesh wrestling team wrapped up its SA Games campaign with a total of six medals including one gold, two silver and three bronze. Out of 15 wrestlers, eight male participants won only one bronze while seven female wrestlers earned Bangladesh as many as five medals, including Mabia Akter Simanta’s first gold for Bangladesh in the 83kg weight category. Rokeya Sultana Sathi and Fulpoti Chakma, on the other hand, won silver.

“The girls have improved a lot. Five of them brought five medals for us, including a gold. Almost everyone improved in their own category. Overall I am happy for what we have done,” said weightlifting federation general secretary Mahiuddin Ahmed.
