Stocks end marginally higher

Stocks closed marginally higher amid poor trade and volatility yesterday as late buying pressure offset early losses.

After falling around 30 points, the benchmark index DSEX rose 9 points or 0.3% to 4,570.

The Shariah index DSES rose marginally 2 points to 1,112. The blue chip comprising index DS30 was up 6 points to 1,748.

The Chittagong Stock Exchange Selective Category Index CSCX closed at 8,555, rising 19 points. Trading activities declined 1% to Tk337 crore compared to the previous session on the DSE.

Losers outpaced gainers as out of 325 issues traded, 163 advanced, 186 declined and 56 remained unchanged.

Power sector dominated the trading, accounting for 14.7% of the total turnover.

Among all the sectors, non-banking financial institutions performed well, surging 2%, lifted by state-owned investment bank ICB that rallied 3.3%. Engineering came second with a rise of 1.3%.

Most other sectors, including ceramics, non-life insurance bank, telecommunication food and allied, and pharmaceuticals closed flat.

Lanka Bangla Securities said the market saw mild profit booking amid consolidation. “Following the sell-off seen in previous session, stocks saw continued weakness during morning trade. However, the benchmark index climbed off the worst level in late trading and closed firmly in flat green zone.”
