The rate of inflation for the month of January eased further to 6.07% from 6.10% in December last year, according to the latest data of Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS).
The food inflation also slipped to 4.33% in January from 5.48% in December, 2015, but the non-food inflation witnessed upward mark registering 8.74% from 7.05% in December.
"More consumption of the non-food items like increase of house rent at the beginning of the year alongside some extra expenditures for children's academic purpose pushed the inflation slightly up in January," said Planning Minister A H M Mustafa Kamal while releasing the monthly consumer price index (CPI) of the BBS at the post ECNEC briefing at the NEC building today.
He, however, said plenty in the supply chain of vegetables and other items helped control the food inflation during the period.
On the other hand, the general inflation at urban level slightly increased to 7.53% in January while it was 5.29% at the rural level.
At the rural level, the food inflation also declined to 3.63%, down from 4.76% in the previous month, while the non-food inflation increased to 8.37% in January as against 7.10% in December.
In urban areas, the food inflation also declined to 5.96% in January, down from 7.14% in December. The non-food inflation rate, however, stood at 9.25% in January which was 6.98% in December.
Moreover, the national wage index rate witnessed a 6.03% growth in January with 133.49 point against 6.46% growth with 132.58 point in December.
The average year- to-year rate of inflation from January 2015 to January 2016 stood at 6.20%, which was 6.87% from January 2014 to January 2015.
