UK wants to send back irregular Bangladeshis

British Immigration Minister James Brokenshire is coming to Dhaka to discuss how to send back irregular Bangladeshis living in the United Kingdom.

He will also discuss combating radicalisation and violent extremism, and security especially airport security with Bangladeshi officials.

A senior government official said he would come to Dhaka on February 14 on a two-day visit and meet Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal.

The official said there is an allegation from the British authorities that a large number of Bangladeshis have become irregular in the European country causing problem to them.

They want to discuss with Bangladesh home office about how to send them back, he said.

Most of the irregular have expired visa or passport.

The British minister also interested to know how Bangladesh combat radicalisation and violent extremism as it has several success stories, he added.

A British team is already working on airport security and he would be briefed about the latest progress in this regard, the official said.

Bangladesh has already submitted a time-bound action plan for the improvement of airport security.

British Labour MPs visit

Three British Labour Party MPs are scheduled to come to Dhaka on February 13 on a five –day visit.

Sir Keir Starmer, an influential Labour leader and shadow home minister at the parliament, will lead the delegation. The other two MPs are Stephen Timms and Steve Reed.

Another government officials said they would have meetings with President Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chowdhuryt, Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali and other dignitaries.

It is to be noted that three Bangladesh-origin British parliament members belong to Labour Party. They are Rushanara Ali, Tulip Rizwana Siddiq and Rupa Asha Huq.

Four MEPs visit

Meanwhile, four members of European Parliament (MEP) are also coming to Dhaka on February 10 on a three-day visit.

Diplomatic sources said they would have meetings with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury, Law Minister Anisul Haq, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and others.
