Wasa: No water crisis in Ctg city after 2021

Engineer AKM Fazlullah, managing director of Chittagong Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (CWASA), yesterday said residents of the port city would not face any water crisis after 2021.

He said this while talking at a press conference held at Chittagong Press Club.

“At present the CWASA is implementing several mega projects – Karnaphuli Water Supply Project, Chittagong Water Supply Improvement and Sanitation Project, Karnaphuli Water Supply Project, phase 2 and Bhandarjuri Water Supply Project. We hope to ensure  uninterrupted water supply for the city dwellers by 2021. As many as 52 crores of litres of water per day will be added with the successful implementation of the ongoing projects,” said the CWASA managing director.

“Karnaphuli Water Supply Project has already achieved 96% progress. The city dwellers will get 14 crore litres of water per day upon completion of the project by June of this year,” added Engineer Fazlullah.

The CWASA started its journey in 1963 with the objective of supplying safe drinking water to the city dwellers. However, the demand-supply gap is really huge. The CWASA can now supply only 210 million litres of water daily (which is only 42% of the total demand) against the demand of 500 million litres of water per day. At present, the CWASA has to supply water to 54,330 domestic connections and 7,387 commercial and industrial connections.

The press conference was attended by CWASA Deputy Managing Director Golam Hossain, Deputy Managing Director Ratan Kumar Sarkar, CWASA Secretary Mohammad Samsuddoha, Commercial Manager Biswajit Bhattacharya Khokon, Jahurul Haque and Public Relations Officer Kazi Nurjahan Shila, among others.
