Bars no bar to Mymensingh Jamaat teachers’ salaries

Nasir Uddin leads the Jamaat-e-Islami’s Tangab Union unit under Mymensingh’s Gafargaon Upazila. He also teaches at the local Bashia High School.

He spent three months jail after police arrested him on June 20 last year. He  was later accused in a case filed under the Explosives Act. But all these did not stop him from withdrawing full salaries from the school regularly.

The school’s headmaster Md Abdul Latif said Nasir was not suspended either as stipulated by the law. The Jamaat leader declined comment.

According to the law, a teacher has to be suspended if he is arrested and sent to jail. The accused will not be entitled to pay and perks until the case is resolved. Local lawyer Rafikul Islam told the Dhaka Tribune: “When a teacher is suspended after his arrest, he gets half of his basic salary. He will be sacked if convicted.”

Goyeshpur Fazil Madrasa’s lecturer Mahmudul Hasan was arrested with explosives and jihadi books. He was released on bail after three months. But the madrasa did not suspend the Jamaat’s upazila unit member.

Management committee chief Ashraf Uddin Badal, also the upazila parishad chairman and a local Awami League leader, said he was looking into the matter.

Upazila Secondary Education Officer Belayet Hossain said he was unaware of such incidents and blamed the management committees for flouting the law.

Panchbagh Islamia Senior Fazil Madrasa’s lecturer Hashim Uddin spent three months in jail last year but he too took out salaries regularly from his Agrani Bank account during that time.

Madrasa’s acting Principal Wahiduzzaman readily admitted to it but declined making specific comments. Two senior management committee members said they did not know anything.

The upazila’s Birui Kamil Madrasa’s lecturer Golam Rabbani, accused in a criminal case, is also receiving regular salaries.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer Siddhartha Shankar Kundu said they cannot take steps before getting written complaints from the concerned educational institutions.

“We will take legal measures once we get written complaints,” he added.
