The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has sought information on the bank accounts of Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) distinguished fellow Debapriya Bhattacharya and his wife Irina Bhattacharya.
The taxes authorities has also sought information on investment in the share market by the two and their family members.
The Central Intelligence Cell of NBR (CIC), in two separate letters issued on Wednesday, asked all scheduled banks and financial institutions to send information regarding their bank accounts from the date of opening to date, saving instruments, vault, credit cards and FDR within 7 days.
NBR exercised its power as per article 113(F) of the Income Tax Ordinance, 1984 for the sake of proper internal review.
Dhaka Tribune has obtained copies of the two notices, signed by CIC assistant director M Nasir Uddin.
According to the letters, the banks were asked to send details of financial transactions made by Debapriya, his wife, and family members since July 1, 2008. The notice also asked the banks to provide information on any bank accounts which are now closed but earlier operated by the two.
The bank authorities will be fined Tk 25,000 once and Tk 500 daily thereafter if they fail to furnish and send the report within the next seven days, the notices warned.
