SC to fix Quasem appeal hearing date Wednesday

The Supreme Court has deferred the date till Wednesday for hearing the appeal of war criminal Mir Quasem Ali.

A four-member SC bench led by Chief Justice SK Sinha passed the order as the conducting lawyer for the condemned war criminal was not present at the court on Tuesday.

The apex court also asked the advocate-on-record to request the assigned lawyer to be present at the court on Wednesday.

Earlier, the SC had fixed Tuesday for giving the date for the hearing.

Additional Attorney General Murad Reza said both the defence and the prosecution submitted the concise statements of the appeal to the Appellate Division.

The SC can start the hearing now, he added.

On May 28 and August 18, 2015, the SC asked the defence and prosecution to submit the concise statements of the appeal.

The International Crimes Tribunal 2 on November 2, 2014, sentenced Quasem to death for committing crimes against humanity in 1971.

On November 30, Mir Quasem filed an appeal with the Supreme Court challenging the death penalty.

Quasem, a member of Jamaat-e-Islami Central Executive Council, in his appeal cited 181 reasons for his acquittal on all the charges.
