Family: Let lawyers meet Mujahid

The family members of war crimes convict Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid have urged upon the state authorities to give permission to his father's lawyers to meet the Jamaat leader.

"We are urging the state authorities to allow our lawyers to meet my father as early as possible so that he takes a decision on the mercy plea," said Mujahid's son Ali Ahmed Mabrur.

Mabrur made the remarks in a press briefing held in the auditorium of Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) around 12 noon Saturday.

He also said the Jamaat-e-Islami leader wished to continue legal fight in a case registered against him for the August 21 grenade attacks on Awami League rally.

“The August 21 grenade attack case remains pending still now, in which Jamaat Secretary General Mujahid made an accused. My father wants to deal the lawsuit legally as long as it sees the end,” said Mujahid.

Earlier on Friday, the family members of Mujahid have called a press conference to brief media over the death row war criminal's review rejection order.

The Appellate Division bench, which on Wednesday had dismissed the his review petition filed against his death sentence, released the full text on Thursday evening.

On July 17, 2013, the International Crimes Tribunal 2 ordered to hang Mujahid by the neck for the massacre of intellectuals including scientists, academics and journalists, and his involvement in the murder and torture of Hindus in Faridpur during the war.

Mujahid appealed against the tribunal verdict on August 11, 2013 and the hearing began on April 29 this year. On June 16, 2015, the Appellate Division delivered its judgement, upholding death for the Jamaat secretary general.

On October 14, Mujahid sought review of the SC verdict.

Mujahid's defence had not raised any point regarding the charge for which the Jamaat-e-Islami secretary general was sentenced to life in prison after the hearing of his review petition.

At the hearing of the review petition before the Appellate Division of the High Court, Mujahid’s lawyers only presented arguments against the charge for which the Al-Badr commander had been sentenced to death.
