The family members of death-row convict Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid have arrived at the Dhaka Central Jail to meet the war criminal.
Twelve member of the family entered the jail around 1:45pm and left around 2:45pm Thursday.
After meeting his father, Mabrur said: “He saw his father mentally strong and normal.”
My father strongly said: “I am innocent, I am innocent, I am innocent”
“Father said if he was hanged, it will be killing the innocent man in a cool brain,” said Mujahid's son.
While asked about seeking presidential mercy, Mabrur said: “The jail authority did not give any order of the review verdict to his father. After getting the order, his father will seek permission to meet his lawyers and through them, he will apply to the president, the guardian of the Constitution.”
However, his father did not disclose what will be the content of the application to be sent to the president, said Mabrur.
Earlier Mabrur confirmed the Dhaka Tribune about seeking permission for the visit from the jail authorities.
The Supreme Court has upheld its previous verdicts on condemned war criminal Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid, rejecting his plea for reviewing death penalty for crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.
On July 17, 2013, the International Crimes Tribunal 2 ordered to hang Mujahid by the neck for the massacre of intellectuals including scientists, academics and journalists, and his involvement in the murder and torture of Hindus during the war.
He was found guilty in five out of the seven charges and sentenced to death in two of them.
The Jamaat leader was arrested on June 29, 2010 on charges of hurting religious sentiment and defying court orders. He was later shown arrested in the war crimes case on August 8. The tribunal indicted him on June 21, 2012.
Mujahid appealed against the tribunal verdict on August 11, 2013 and the hearing began on April 29 this year. The hearing continued for nine working days and ended on May 27.
On June 16, 2015, the Appellate Division delivered its judgement, upholding death for the Jamaat secretary general.
