Queen of the Netherlands Maxima Zorreguieta Cerruti has arrived in Bangladesh on a three-day visit to support global efforts to reduce poverty, achieve economic development and empower women. A special aircraft carrying the Queen, who is also the United Nations Secretary-General's special advocate for Financial Inclusion, landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at around 8am on Monday, BSS reports. Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali and Bangladesh Bank Governor Atiur Rahman received the Queen at the airport, said a foreign ministry spokesperson. Earlier, UNDP in a statement said that Queen Maxima is visiting Bangladesh on an invitation of the Bangladesh government as UN Secretary-General's special advocate for inclusive finance for development. "The visit to Bangladesh is part of Queen Maxima's global efforts to raise awareness and foster action towards financial inclusion for everyone," it said. The visit will focus on strengthening of the microfinance sector and advancing mobile financial services for financially excluded populations and small and medium enterprises. During her stay in Bangladesh, Queen Maxima is scheduled to meet President Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith and Bangladesh Bank Governor Atiur Rahman. She will also have a meeting with BRAC Chairperson Sir Fazley Hasan Abed and senior officials of the Bangladesh government, development partners and members of civil society and the private sector. She will visit several locations outside Dhaka as well to explore the experiences and needs of low-income customers such as garment workers who are paid digitally, and meet a female entrepreneur, who built her business with the help of financial services, and clients and staff of banking agents and mobile money operations, the UNDP release added.
