The country’s dire energy crisis has caused the government to suspend all future gas connections to CNG (compressed natural gas) filling stations.
The Energy and Mineral Resources Division (EMRD) issued the order on October 7.
New CNG filling stations have been waiting for gas connections since 2009, according to EMRD data.
“Now, 54 new CNG stations are waiting to get gas connections. Already they have filed writ petitions in the High Court,” CNG Filling Station and Conversion Workshop Owners Association Secretary Farhan Noor told the Dhaka Tribune yesterday.
Earlier, the government stopped providing gas to captive power plants.
Currently, Petrobangla supplies about 120 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) of gas against a demand of 130mmcfd of natural gas to 585 CNG filling stations across the country.
