NBR: Varsities to pay VAT, not students

The authorities of private universities will pay the 7.5% VAT imposed on the tuition fees, National Board of Revenue (NBR) has said.

VAT on the tuition fees was not imposed  with an intention to be realised from the students, said a NBR press release issued on Thursday afternoon.

“The VAT is included in the current tuition fees that the students pay,” it added.

There is no scope to increase tuition fees as the VAT is included in the current tuition fees, said the release.

The NBR came up with the clarification after thousands of students of private universities took to the streets across Dhaka on Thursday demanding withdrawal of 7.5% VAT imposed on tuition fees.

The protesters are also condemning the police attack on the students of East West University, who demonstrated in the capital on Wednesday.
