The High Court yesterday banned fish farming in the lagoons of Syedabad sewage treatment plant of Dhaka Wasa and also issued seven directives in this regard.
The bench of Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Md Ashraful Kamal gave the order while delivering the verdict on a 2011 writ petition.
According to the court directives, the Wasa authorities will have to erect boundary walls around the lagoons within two years, and use medicine to kill poisonous fishes in the water bodies in every two months.
The court asked to deploy Ansar members and security guards to look after the lagoons.
The Wasa authorities were also instructed to put up signboards to warn people of the toxic nature of fishes in the lagoons, and also to warn against farming and catching fishes.
Human Rights for Peace and Bangladesh filed the writ petition in July 2011, attaching a report that said poisonous fishes from the lagoons were supplied to Dhaka kitchen markets.
After the initial hearing, the High Court issued a ruling and on August 30 this year said the verdict would be pronounced on September 6.
