Brahmaputra crosses danger level in Gaibandha

Brahmaputra, one of the mighty rivers in the country, crossed its danger level again deteriorating flood situation in the river basin and chars of four upazilas here in last 24 hours ending at 9am Thursday.

The officials of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) said water level of the river Brahmaputra increased by 25 cm during the period due to incessant rain and onrush of hilly waters from the upstream.

The river which crossed its danger level for the second time was flowing 23 cm above its danger mark at Fulchharighat point in the district inundating fresh areas of Sundarganj, Sadar, Fulchhari and Shaghata upazilas in the district.

Many of the flood victims had taken shelter on the nearby flood control embankment and were passing their days miserably with their belongings including domestic animals and poultry birds for want of food, drinking water, and fodder.

The standing crops particularly T-Aman paddy, seed bed and summer vegetable of the chars and river basin areas of the upazilas went under flood water making the growers worried about their crops, said AKM Ruhul Amin, deputy director of DAE.

As the Ghagot river is like to cross its danger level any time Thursday, the security measures had been adopted on Gaibandha Town Protection Embankment so that any vested quarters could not harm the embankment.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) M Abdus Samad said the Brahmaputra crossed its danger level two weeks ago and was flowing above its danger mark for five days at a stretch creating untold sufferings to the people.

After improving the flood situation, the district is going to experience flood for the second time Thursday, the DC said.

In reply to a question, the DC said as many as 305 tonnes of rice and cash TK 6.71 lakh were distributed to the flood victims of the district so far.

In addition, relief packages containing 10 materials including rice, pulse, oil, milk, potato, onion, sugar, and fire box were disbursed to the 700 flood affected people of the district, he added.
