The High Court yesterday asked the authorities concerned to rename the Khan A Sabur Road in Khulna and Shah Azizur Rahman Hall of Kushtia Islamic University as those were named after anti-liberation people.
Khan A Sabur was Ayub Khan’s communications minister during the Pakistan period while Shah Azizur Rahman was prime minister during Ziaur Rahman’s regime. Both of them were leaders of Muslim League, which opposed the birth of Bangladesh.
Following the hearing on a writ petition, the HC bench of Justice Kazi Rezaul Haque and Abu Taher Md Saifur Rahman passed the order.
The bench asked the Khulna City Corporation mayor to restore the Khulna city’s road to Jessore Road and the university authorities to change the name of the dormitory.
Shahriar Kabir, war crime researcher and Executive President of Ekatorrer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee, and noted historian Muntasir Mamun moved the petition on Sunday.
The petitioners were represented by AK Rashedul Haque while Deputy Attorney General Taposh Kumar Biswas stood for the state.
The petitioners filed a writ with the HC in 2012 praying to remove names of anti-liberation persons from different establishments, roads and structures in the country.
