Cabinet approves nuclear power plant ordinance

The cabinet has given final approval to the draft of “Nuclear Power Plant Ordinance 2015” in a bid to ensure development of the power sector by 2021.

The draft act got the cabinet approval in the regular weekly meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the Prime Minister's Office on Monday morning.

After the meeting, Cabinet Secretary M Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan briefed reporters at the secretariat.

He said the plant is expected to start production in 2021.

Earlier on May 4, the cabinet secretary said that Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission will own the plant at Rooppur in Pabna while a Nuclear Power Company will run it.

The science and technology ministry proposed the new law in order to give the matter a legal foothold, he said.

According to Bhuiyan, the law details the provision to set up the independent company, role of the government’s control to run the company and the role of Russia which is providing technology for the plant.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, while inaugurating the plant in 2013, had said that Russian Atomic Energy Corporation would supply required energy for running the plant and take back the wastes.

The cabinet also gave approval to the drafts Civil Service Act 2015, National Disaster Management Policy 2015, Army (amendment) Act 2015 and Air Force (amendment) Act 2015.
