Police to show zero tolerance for extortion on highways

To ensure hassle free, save and smooth journey ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr police would shows zero tolerance against rampant extortion in three highways in Chittagong division.

Beside, the movements of truck, covered van and lorry except emergency items carrying traffic on Dhaka-Chittagong, Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar and Chittagong-Rangamati Highways will remain halted from prior to and after the Eid day, said Chittagong District’s Superintendent of Police (SP) AKM Hafiz Akhtar yesterday.

The Chittagong Metropolitan Police took the decision following a meeting held between law enforcers and transport owners at the office of police super.

During the meeting, SP AKM Hafiz Akhtar said a control room had already been set up to ensure hassle-free journey for home-goers during Eid holidays.

Referring an official decision of Roads and Highways Department, Hafiz Akhtar assured the transport owners that the battered road would be repaired within next seven days.

Mustafizur Rahaman, additional police superintendent of Chittagong district, Mrinal Chowdhury president of Bangladesh Sarak Paribahan Sramik Federation of East zone committee, Md Musa, president of Bangladesh Sarak Paribahan Sramik Federation Regional Committee and Md Ziauddin, divisional engineer of Roads and Highway Department, Chittagong were also present at the meeting.
