She made the announcement on Wednesday afternoon. The maiden election to NCC was held on October 30, 2011. Dr Selina Hayat Ivy was elected country’s first female city mayor defeating Awami League-backed candidate Shamim Osman; before then, she was elected as the chairman of the now defunct Narayanganj municipality in 2003. In a press briefing after the resignation, Ivy said: “I tried my best in past five years to develop Narayanganj city. More development works are underway including the beautification of Baburail’s canal. “I never stopped for Narayanganj’s development despite many conspiracies and propagandas against me. So, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has asked me to work for the Boat symbol.” She added: “As an evaluation of my recent year’s dedication, I want people of Narayanganj to vote me for serving them again. I believe they will vote me as PM has trusted me with the Boat symbol.” According to the schedule, the deadline for nomination submission for the polls is Thursday, and the deadline to withdraw candidacy is on December 4. The polls will be held on December 22. On October 18, Ivy got the nomination from a ruling AL meeting held at the Gono Bhaban residence of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Earlier, on Tuesday, Narayanganj City Awami League in an extended meeting proposed the names of three leaders excluding Ivy’s name to the central committee as mayoral candidates for the city polls.
