14 killed in road accidents across country

At least 14 people were killed in separate road accidents in Mymensingh, Habiganj and Gaibandaha districts yesterday.

Our Mymensingh correspondent reports: Seven people were killed in a head-on collision between two auto-rickshaws in Nimuria area under Muktagachha upazila.

The deceased are Mantu Mian, 30, Tofa Mian, 75, Md Iqbal, 40, Abdus Salam, 32, Joinal Abedin, 60, and Mosa Nabiran, 48,.

Police sources said the accident took place when two CNG-run auto-rickshaws collided head on in the area, leaving Abedin, Joinal and Mantu dead on the spot and four others injured while they were going to Mymensingh court from Muktagachha to appear in a case.

Another four died on the way to Mymensingh Medical College and Hospital.

Sub-Inspector Ameer Hossain of Muktagachha police station confirmed the incident.

In Habiganj, five people, four of a family, were killed and two others were injured when a private car collided head on with a truck in the Sadarghat area on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway under Nabiganj upazila, said our correspondent.

The deceased are Abdul Hamid, 70, his wife Kulsum Begum, 55, son Abdul Kadir, 35, and daughter Sharmin Akhter, 14, of Jaflong-Mohmmadpur village under Gowainghat upazila and the private car driver Saha Alam, 32, of Bilatoil area under Jaintiapur upazila of Sylhet district.

Police said the accident occurred when the rock-laden truck and the private car carrying five persons hit each other in the area early this morning.

All the private car passengers, including the driver, died on the spot. The injured were sent to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital.

Sherpur Highway police station Officer-in-Charge Nurunnabi Sarker confirmed the incident.

Our Gaibandha correspondent said, a couple were killed as a truck rammed into their motorcycle in Sundarganj upazila.

The dead are Matiar Rahman, 50, and his wife Asma Begum, 35. Locals said, a truck rammed into the bike at around 10:30am, leaving the couple dead on the spot.

Sundarganj police station Officer-in-Charge Mozammel confirmed the accident.

Police seized the truck but its driver managed to flee.
