Prices of imported commodities to go higher

Finance Minister AMA Muhith has placed the annual budget proposal around Tk2.95tn (Tk295,000 crore) for 2015-16 fiscal year.

While speaking at the house on Thursday, Muhith proposed increase of value added taxes, ranging from 5% to 20%, on a number of imported products and commodities.

Imported food items, which will get costlier, are frozen and canned fishes, flours, shrimps and prawns, tomato, vegetables, butter black tea and betel-nut.

Prices of two-stroke engines for three wheelers, four-stroke engines meant for three-wheelers and motorcycles, seats for motorcycles, tyres and electric battery will also get higher.

Besides, sound recording and reproducing gadgets and software, sanitary fittings, kitchen ware and table ware will go up.

Hardware items like paints, iron tube pipes, imitation jewellery, uncut diamonds, silk-made items and safety glasses will also see price hike.
