Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) will go on a large-scale eviction drive against illegal structures on footpaths and roads today.
Confirming the matter to the Dhaka Tribune yesterday, DSCC Chief Executive Officer Md Ansar Ali Khan said the drive would start at Gulistan intersection at 11am.
The decision for launching an eviction drive was taken at a meeting of the mayors and high-ups of Dhaka South and North City Corporations on May 28.
Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, who was present in the meeting, said billboards, makeshift shops, temporary vendors and other illegal structures would be removed from the roads and footpaths.
Initially the drives would be carried out at Gulistan on June 1 and then at Farmgate on June 12.
Speaking at the meeting, DSCC Mayor Sayeed Khokon emphasised on the need for minimum education for drivers.
Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Annisul Haque said most of the billboards set up across the city were illegal.
Sources said, Obaidul Quader would gradually sit with Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK), Local Government Division, Local Government Engineering Department, Roads and Highways Department and Bangladesh Railway in a bid to recover the government land from illegal occupiers. The meeting will likely happen on June 15.
Meanwhile, DNCC Mayor Annisul Huq yesterday visited Ward 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 including the Gabtali bus terminal to exchange views with the locals and inform them about the city corporation’s services.
Annisul assured that various services such as mosquito control, waste management, health-care facilities and infrastructure improvement would be handled strictly.
He also directed the DNCC officials to provide proper and better services.
