Three Kilometer-road from Balaghat to Mamar Dukan of the Sylhet-Tamabil Highway has been in bad shape over few months causing suffering to the commuters.
Sources said the 55 kilometer-long highway from Sylhet to Ballaghat has linked the tourist spot Jaflong. The main entrance of the tourist spot Mamar Dukan to Balaghat has been in a bad shape as potholes developed at many points of the road.
The popular tourist spot is losing public interest and stone laden vehicles are plying with risk due to poor condition of the road, allege locals.
A number of accidents had taken place recently causing unbearable sufferings to commuters who were heading to the tourist spot, they said.
Locals have been holding many programmes demanding repairs of the road for long time. But little impact seems to be made on the concerned authorities, alleged Abdul Matlib Khan, a resident of the area.
Monjur Ahmed, a local resident, said: “Jaflong’s stone as well as the tourist spot contribute to the national economy. But, the concerned authorities have no attention of this road.”
Illias Uddin Lipu, General Secretary of the Jaflong Stone Crusher Mill Owners Association said: “We have repeatedly contacted with the authorities to repair the road, but all our efforts went in vein.”
Recently leaders of Jaflong Stone Business Association, Jaflong Stone Crusher Mill Owners Association, Truck Malik Sommittee, Truck Drivers Association and Ballaghat Stone Suppliers Association in a meeting have demanded urgent repairs to the road.
About the dilapidated condition of the road, Kurshed Alom, Sub divisional Engineer of the Road and Highway Department said: “We are trying to take a project in this regard.”
“We have already discussed the issue at the district co-ordination committee,” he added.
