Marking 20 years of its journey in the country’s theatre arena, Nagarik Natyangan hosted an eight-day theatre festival, comprising of nine staging by eight participating troupes at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA).
The festival was inaugurated yesterday through a programme of conferring veteran theatre persona, Ferdousi Mazumdar, with a lifetime achievement award for her immense contribution in generating interest in the medium. Besides receiving the accolade, Ferdousi performed parts of Abdulliah Al Mamun’s acclaimed monodrama Kokilara on opening day. Later, Dhaka Theatre stages two of the troupe’s acclaimed plays, Golpo Niye Golpo and Iti Patromita.
Dhaka Theatre, Loko Natyadal (Siddheswary), Padatik Natya Sangsad (TSC), Somoy Natyadal and the host, Nagarik Natyangan are the participating local troupes. Also, Indian troupe Abhash will stage two of its plays, while Naye Natua will stage one play at the fest. In addition, Nagarik’s own production Pragoitihashik will see its 100th staging on May 23.
The festival - themed as Chitto Amar Bhoyshunno, Uccho Amar Sheer - has been dedicated to English playwright William Shakespeare and Indian actor-director Shambhu Mitra, will conclude through the staging of Rupkotha Chupkotha by visiting Indian troupe Abhash on May 28.
