Turn it up

People never ask me what’s on my playlist, but I tell them anyway. They respond by saying I have terrible taste in music- that Chris Martin and Zohad from Nemesis are both very handsome, and will I just please pay them back the money I owe and then leave? I decided to go public. Instead of being ignored by a single person, I can now be ignored by the thousands of people who readDhaka Tribune.

He Died Fighting— Brian Blade and the Fellowship Band, Landmarks, 2014

If you’re a drummer, listen to this. If you have a soul, listen to this.

Savages— Marina and the Diamonds, Froot, 2015

I love everything Marina does. Froot is probably her best album yet. I’m torn between “Savages”

and “I’m a Ruin” as my favorite.

Troll’s Story (Furioso Disco)— Jean-Jacques Perrey and Dana Countryman, The Happy

Electropop Music Machine, 2006

Jean-Jacques Perrey pretty much invented electronic music. In his 90s now, he still goes on

tour, resplendent in a golden space suit. This is one of my favorite albums from his newer

material. But he has 60 years of amazing stuff to choose from.

Flight of the Sparrow— X Factor, Rock XOX, 2015

Iqbal Asif Jewel represents not just the apotheosis of instrumental music in Bangladesh, but is

also one of the boldest hat designers in Asia.

Picture 5 — Jack DeJohnette, Pictures, 1976

In Pictures, drummer Jack DeJohnette plays most instruments. He’s joined in this song by John

Abercrombie.

Priyo Akashi— James, Palabe Kothaye, 1994

I always say, “Asmane guru Azam Khan, prithibite James.” This is one of the living guru’s

greatest songs. I first heard it 21 years ago and it still gives me goosebumps.

Your Ride— Bad Passion, Doin’ It Slow, 2011

Bad Passion are a Toronto-based duo making slow, soulful, sexy electronic music. This one is from

their first EP.

Tiny Invasion — Rabbit Rabbit, Rabbit Rabbit Radio, Vol. 2-Swallow Me Whole, 2015

I discovered Rabbit Rabbit just days ago, and their live performance left me breathless. I didn’t

even know music could be this beautiful.

Come — Jaggery, For the Record, 2014

Here’s a live version of a great song by one of my absolute favorite bands. Everything they do is

genius.

Shongkolpo — The Attempted Band, Shongkolpo single, 2015

This band has the most handsome drummer ever! The song is dedicated to the indefatigable Wasfia

Nazreen. And it’s free!
