Environment minister urges protection of water bodies

Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Saber Hossain Chowdhury has called for the protection of rivers, reservoirs and the environment to ensure that people live well.

“Going against nature can never result in benefits. Everyone should work together to fight for sustainable development and against climate change and continue development,” the minister said at a workshop jointly organized by the Bangladesh Water Development Board and Dhaka Wasa on Thursday.

The workshop focused on the importance of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's directives for Bangladesh's future water development efforts and specific methods of their implementation.

The environment minister said: “On the instructions of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, we have to live with floods and natural disasters. Interrupting the normal flow of river water destroys the environment and biodiversity.  Emphasis should be placed on water resource management, flood control, addressing climate change impacts and sustainable use of water resources. Bangladesh's future water development efforts must proceed with a specific goal and objective.”

Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Md Tazul Islam presided over the workshop. State Minister for Water Resources Zaheed Farooque was present as the guest of honour.
