Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Md Shahab Uddin said Bangladesh hopes the COP28 UAE will deliver a positive outcome.
He said operationalization of the Loss and Damage fund, establishing funding arrangements, reaching an agreement on the framework for the global goal of adaptation, aligning 2030 mitigation targets with the 1.5°C temperature goal, and enhancing financial support for Least Developed Countries (LDCs) to implement their National Adaptation Plans (NAP) and Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) are key priorities in COP28.
“Apart from the UAE government, we hope the government of the UK will also play a very active role in bringing together all countries to deliver the way forward and demonstrate solidarity on climate action,” the minister said while UK Development Director and Deputy High Commissioner in Bangladesh, Matt Cannellcalled on him at the secretariat in Dhaka on Thursday.
Addressing the UK government as one of the trusted friends of Bangladesh in the fight against climate change, the environment minister said Bangladesh under the able leadership Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is pursuing a low-carbon green development in its journey towards sustainable development.
Shahab Uddin said Bangladesh requires international cooperation in the implementation of NAP, NDC, and MCCP and in energy transition, and conservation of biodiversity, wetlands and forests.
Matt Cannell, British deputy high commissioner, Dhaka said climate actions including operationalization of the Loss and Damage fund are Bangladesh and the UK’s mutual priorities.
He said the current UK government is strongly committed to climate actions. Mutual cooperation between these two countries will be stronger following the Bangladesh-UK climate accord.
Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Dr Farina Ahmed, Additional Secretary (Environment) Sanjay Kumar Bhowmik, Additional Secretary Dr Fahmida Khanom, Anna Ballance, climate and environment adviser, and Marjan Nur (Policy Manager) of British High Commission were also present in the meeting.
