Two killed in separate incidents in Dhaka

A woman was killed after being hit by a bus in Dhaka’s Tikatuli on Monday, while a prison inmate died under treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) the same day.

The road accident occurred around 1:30pm beneath the Tikatuli foot overbridge. Police seized the bus involved in the accident and detained its driver.

Rina Rani Das, 40, was returning home on foot after dropping off her younger son, Prithu Raj Ghosh, 12, a sixth-grader at Nawabpur School, her elder son Pronoy Ghosh said.

As she was crossing the road beneath the foot overbridge, two buses operated by Bandhan Paribahan and Doel Paribahan were reportedly racing against each other. The Doel Paribahan bus hit Rina, throwing her onto the road and leaving her critically injured.

With police assistance, she was rescued and taken to the DMCH emergency department around 4:00pm. Doctors declared her dead after examination.

Sub-Inspector Abu Bakkar of Wari Police Station said Rina’s body had been kept at the DMCH morgue. Police had seized the bus and detained its driver in connection with the incident.

Rina was the wife of Biswajit Ghosh of Ibrahim village in Nabinagar upazila, Brahmanbaria. She worked as a domestic help and lived with her family on KM Das Lane in Tikatuli. She is survived by her husband and two sons.

Meanwhile, Akash Biswas, 24, an inmate of Dhaka Central Jail, died while receiving treatment at DMCH on Monday afternoon.

Jail authorities had directed prison guards to admit him to Ward 601 of the hospital’s medicine department on October 6 after he fell ill in custody.

He died around 3:30pm on Monday after undergoing medical examinations, while under treatment.

Inspector Md Habibur Rahman, in charge of the DMCH police outpost, confirmed the death, saying the body had been kept at the hospital morgue for an autopsy.

Akash was the son of Abdul Gafur Biswas of the Kotwali area in Jessore. The case in which he was detained was not immediately known.
