One person died while undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka after a gas leak explosion at a power plant canteen in Meghnaghat.
The deceased was identified as Shankar, 25. He died on Thursday evening while receiving treatment, said Dr Shawon Bin Rahman, resident surgeon at the hospital.
“Shankar died this evening while undergoing treatment. He had burns on 46% of his body. Five others injured in the same incident are admitted to the hospital,” he said.
Five of the 11 other injured are currently being treated at the same hospital.
Earlier on Wednesday afternoon, 12 people suffered burn injuries in a gas leak explosion at the canteen of the Jera Meghnaghat Power Plant. They were rescued and taken to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka.
According to the institute, Amir, 25, sustained burns on 80% of his body, Kawsar, 30, on 59%, Al Amin, 40, on 22%, and Nazmul Sheikh, 40, on 13%.
Colleagues said officers and employees of the Jera Meghnaghat Power Plant were having lunch at the canteen when the explosion occurred, leaving at least 12 people with burns to their hands, faces, and legs.
They said the explosion was believed to have been triggered by a gas leak inside the canteen.
