CCC faces acute manpower shortage

The CCC mayor came up with the announcement while exchanging views with the senior journalists of the port city. “The corporation is now running its activities with only 8,000 staff. However, the corporation requires 12,000 officials and manpower to run its activities without any hindrance,” said the mayor. “The CCC is now running as per the organogram of 1988. I have been working to revise the organogram and I have already sent a letter to the ministry concerned,” added the mayor. The mayor also announced that activities of all the departments of the corporation were going to be brought under automation soon. Mentionable that Chittagong City Corporation has already undertaken measures to introduce Holding Tax Management System (HTMS). The automation payment of holding taxes aims to ensure transparency in tax collection system. Besides, the CCC also took initiative to bring its all educational institutes under automation. “As per rules, a city corporation is supposed to construct roads, clean up and illuminate the city. However, Chittagong City Corporation is providing health and education services to city residents. That’s why the main tasks of the corporation are being hindered,” added Nasir. “The corporation had to count Tk9 crore for paying off the salary of the officials and employees when I took over the charge. But, now the amount stands at Tk18 crore. Besides, the corporation subsidizes Tk42 crore and Tk13 crore in education and health sectors respectively. To recoup the subsidy, there is no alternative to realising tax,” said the mayor. “The poor and insolvent people will be exempted from paying city corporation tax. However, those who are rich will not be spared and they must be brought under the tax net,” said the mayor.
