Minister: Committee to probe freedom fighter’s burial in Pirojpur

Liberation War Affairs Minister Ahmed Azam Khan has said a committee will be formed to investigate the incident in Pirojpur in which the wife and daughter of a freedom fighter allegedly dug up his grave and buried him.

He said those responsible would face appropriate action based on the findings of the investigation.

The minister made the remarks while responding to questions from journalists after visiting the Martyred Intellectuals Memorial in Rayerbazar, Dhaka, on Monday.

“I will look into the matter as soon as I return to my office today. I will also speak with the Muktijoddha Sangsad in Pirojpur. We will form a committee to investigate the incident and take appropriate action against those responsible based on the investigation report,” he said.

The minister said Bangladesh is an independent, democratic republic and there is no scope for anyone to take a position against the Liberation War.

He said the Liberation War Affairs Ministry had not been properly informed about the incident involving the freedom fighter.

“If the ministry had been informed, it could have taken the matter into consideration earlier and taken necessary steps,” he said.

Ahmed Azam Khan said some people opposed the Liberation War in 1971 and that he believed those forces remained active in the country.

“They are trying to advance their position through various tactics and, when given the opportunity, attempt to undermine the Liberation War by portraying different movements as a ‘second independence’,” he said.

The minister said the ministry has been working to thwart any conspiracy against the Liberation War and freedom fighters.
“We are always prepared to deal with such situations,” he added.
