Truck driver held with 800 litres of fuel in Aminbazar

Police have detained a truck driver for allegedly smuggling 800 litres of diesel meant for excavator operations at the Dhaka North City Corporation’s (DNCC) landfill in Aminbazar, Savar.

The truck used to transport the fuel was also seized.

The driver, identified as Al-Amin, 34, was detained on Thursday night near Salehpur Bridge in Aminbazar on the Dhaka-Aricha Highway.

Al-Amin is from Barisal. He lives in a rented house in the Godarghat area of Mirpur-1 in Dhaka and works as a driver of a garbage-carrying drum truck for the city corporation.

According to police, officers were conducting routine checks on the Dhaka-Aricha Highway in Aminbazar on Thursday night when they stopped a truck carrying 40 containers of diesel, totalling 800 litres, towards Dhaka.

Police searched the truck and seized the fuel and the vehicle, detaining the driver on suspicion of smuggling.

Aminbazar Police Camp In-charge Zakir Al Ahsan, who is under Savar Model police station, said the driver admitted to smuggling the fuel during initial interrogation.

He said the driver was transporting the government-owned diesel from the Aminbazar landfill to a fuel-smuggling syndicate in Mohammadpur, Dhaka.

Legal action is under way, the police official added.
