Bus fares will increase by Tk 0.17 per kilometre following the latest fuel price hike, with the government and transport owners agreeing on the revised rate.
Bangladesh Road Transport Owners-Workers Coordination Council Coordinator Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas announced the decision after a meeting with Road Transport and Bridges Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam at the Secretariat on Tuesday.
The meeting was held to discuss revised bus fares following the fuel price increase.
The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) had proposed a Tk 0.20 increase per kilometre for both city and long-distance bus services on Monday.
Following discussions, the government and transport owners agreed on a Tk 0.17 increase instead.
Shimul Biswas said transport owners were requested, in the public interest, to charge Tk 0.03 less than the proposed rate, and they agreed.
“Overall, fares will increase by Tk 0.17 per kilometre instead of the proposed Tk 0.20,” he said, adding that a gazette notification on the revised fares would be issued on Tuesday.
Under the new rates, bus and minibus fares in Dhaka and Chittagong metropolitan areas will rise from Tk 2.53 to Tk 2.70 per kilometre.
On long-distance routes, fares will increase from Tk 2.23 to Tk 2.40 per kilometre.
