Information Adviser Dr Zahed Ur Rahman on Tuesday urged the media and social media users not to speculate or name any cultural activist in connection with the murder of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi.
Responding to journalists’ questions at a weekly briefing at the Directorate of Information conference room at the Secretariat, he said the chief prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal had mentioned receiving some preliminary information about the possible involvement of a cultural activist.
“However, it would not be appropriate for the media or social media to speculate and name anyone in this regard,” he said.
The adviser said the state would investigate the matter and that a person’s identity would be made public only if formal allegations or charges were brought against them.
“Whether someone actively supported Sheikh Hasina or spoke in her favour is a separate matter. If that person was not involved in the crime, it would be unjust to hold them responsible for someone else’s wrongdoing,” he said.
He also cautioned against spreading anyone’s name merely to create “sensation” over such a sensitive matter.
