Gold jewellery prices rise again in Bangladesh

Gold jewellery prices have risen again in Bangladesh, with the Bangladesh Jewellers Association (BAJUS) raising the price of 22-carat gold by Tk3,849 per bhori.

Under the revised rates, a bhori of 22-carat gold jewellery will cost Tk240,628, including VAT.

The new prices took effect at 10am on Thursday, according to a BAJUS notice. The association said the prices were adjusted following a rise in the price of pure gold in the local market.

The new rates were approved at a meeting of BAJUS’s Standing Committee on Pricing and Price Monitoring on Thursday morning. The notice was signed by committee Chairman Dr Dewan Aminul Islam Shaheen.

Under the new rates, 22-carat cadmium (hallmarked) gold jewellery has been priced at Tk20,630 per gram, including VAT. The price of 21-carat gold is Tk19,700 per gram, while 18-carat gold costs Tk16,920 per gram.

Gold jewellery made using the traditional method has been priced at Tk13,820 per gram.

BAJUS has also revised silver jewellery prices. The price of 22-carat cadmium (hallmarked) silver has been set at Tk455 per gram, while 21-carat and 18-carat silver will cost Tk435 and Tk375 per gram, respectively. Traditional-method silver jewellery will cost Tk285 per gram.

Making charges will apply depending on the design of the jewellery, BAJUS said. However, as VAT is already included in the listed selling prices, jewellers cannot charge customers VAT separately.

Existing BAJUS rules on the exchange, purchase and sale of gold jewellery will remain in effect, excluding applicable VAT, making charges and stone prices.

The revised prices will remain effective at all jewellery shops across the country until further notice.

BAJUS said the decision was taken after reviewing the overall market situation amid rising prices of pure gold and silver.
