The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has said no teen gangs are currently active in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur as it continues a special drive to make the area “godfather-free.”
RAB-2 Commander and Additional DIG Md Naimul Hasan made the statement at a press briefing at the RAB Media Centre in Kawran Bazar on Friday afternoon.
“We are arresting the godfathers rather than focusing on lower-level members or small groups,” he said, adding that Mohammadpur had become much more stable following the arrests.
He expressed hope that the area would become safer and more liveable in the near future.
Naimul said the portrayal of Mohammadpur as a “city of gods” was largely a perception and that RAB was working to change that image.
“We have already made significant progress. We hope to completely eliminate gang and criminal activities from Mohammadpur in the near future,” he said.
He added that similar operations were underway across the capital to make the city safer and curb criminal activities.
Asked about those behind the killing of teen gang leader “Alex Emon” in Mohammadpur, Naimul said the investigating officer would be able to provide details.
He said the arrest of five people was an important development in assisting the investigation. The motive and those behind the killing are expected to emerge after investigators question the suspects in remand, he added.
“As we are not directly conducting the investigation, the police station handling the case can provide more information,” he said.
