Gold prices rise again in Bangladesh

Gold prices have risen again in the domestic market, with the Bangladesh Jewellers Association (BAJUS) setting new retail prices following an increase in the price of pure gold.

Under the new rates, 22-carat gold jewellery will cost Tk20,160 per gram, including VAT.

BAJUS’s Standing Committee on Pricing and Price Monitoring set the new prices at a meeting at 9am on Tuesday. The revised rates came into effect at 10am the same day.

According to a BAJUS notice, the price of 21-carat gold jewellery has been set at Tk19,255 per gram, while 18-carat gold will cost Tk16,535 per gram.

Gold jewellery made under the traditional method will cost Tk13,505 per gram.

Silver jewellery prices have also increased. The price of 22-carat hallmarked silver has been set at Tk435 per gram, while 21-carat silver will cost Tk415, 18-carat Tk360 and traditional-method silver Tk270 per gram.

BAJUS said the new prices were approved unanimously after considering the overall market situation and the rise in the prices of pure gold and silver.

Labour charges to vary by design

Labour charges will apply separately based on the design and style of the jewellery, BAJUS said.

However, as VAT is already included in the listed retail prices, jewellers cannot charge customers VAT separately.

BAJUS’s existing rules will remain in effect for the exchange and purchase of gold and silver jewellery, excluding applicable VAT, labour charges and stone prices.

The new rates will remain effective at jewellery shops across the country until further notice, the notice said.
