The government will observe a nationwide public holiday on August 5 to mark July Mass Uprising Day. The day was added to the official list of government holidays last year.
Government, semi-government and autonomous institutions will remain closed on the occasion.
However, officials and employees of essential and public service institutions will continue to perform their duties according to their designated duty rosters.
Essential services include hospitals and emergency healthcare, law enforcement agencies, Fire Service and Civil Defence, electricity, gas and water supply institutions, seaports and land ports, airports, Bangladesh Railway, road public transport, prisons, disaster management services and other essential government services.
According to the Ministry of Public Administration's 2026 government holiday calendar, August 5 falls on Wednesday. Government employees who take casual or optional leave on Thursday, August 6, will be able to enjoy a continuous 4-day break by combining it with the weekly holidays on Friday and Saturday.
Whether private sector banks, financial institutions, garment factories and other commercial establishments will remain closed on August 5 will be decided by the respective institutions in line with government directives and their own policies.
Last year, garment factories also observed a holiday on August 5. At the time, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) said in a statement that the decision had been taken in solidarity with the government-declared public holiday and to pay tribute to those martyred on that day.
BGMEA has not yet announced any decision regarding factory operations on August 5 this year.
