Bangladesh Coast Guard on Sunday organized a public awareness meeting in Chandpur to promote fisheries conservation, prevent illegal fishing and encourage sustainable fishing practices among local fishermen.
The program, organized by Coast Guard Station Chandpur, was held at around 11am in areas along the Meghna and Dakatia rivers, Coast Guard Media Officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujan said in a statement, said a press release.
The discussion focused on the importance of conserving the country's fisheries resources, preventing the use of illegal and banned fishing nets, refraining from fishing during breeding seasons, protecting river ecosystems and aquatic biodiversity, and ensuring sustainable fisheries management.
Officials also listened to the views and concerns of local fishermen and assured them of continued cooperation in protecting fisheries resources and promoting compliance with fisheries regulations.
The event was attended by Coast Guard officials, the district fisheries officer, the upazila fisheries officer, other officials of the Department of Fisheries, representatives of local fishermen's associations and members of the fishing community.
In the statement, Lt Cmdr Sabbir Alam Sujan said the Coast Guard remains committed to maintaining law and order in coastal and riverine areas while carrying out community outreach programmes to support fishermen and local residents. He added that the force will continue organising similar awareness campaigns to conserve fisheries resources, curb illegal fishing and promote sustainable use of the country's aquatic resources.
