Anis Alamgir among 6 named in complaint over July uprising remarks

A written complaint has been lodged with Shahbagh Police Station in Dhaka against six individuals, including journalist Anis Alamgir and Soma Islam, accusing them of making derogatory remarks about the July Uprising and threatening its participants.

Millat Hossain, a member of an organisation named Rashtra Sanglap (State Dialogue), filed the complaint on Saturday.

The other individuals named in the complaint are lawyer and model Jannatul Pia, former Chhatra League leader and columnist Momin Mehedi, model Maria Kispatta, and model-actress Tusti.

According to the complaint, the accused made offensive, misleading and defamatory comments on social media and television talk shows at various times regarding the July movement, its participants, and those who were killed or injured during the protests. They have also been accused of attempting to undermine the movement's image, spreading disinformation, and engaging in politically motivated activities.

Shahidul Islam, the duty officer at Shahbagh Police Station, said the complaint has not yet been registered as a case.

"Our senior officers will review the allegations and decide on the next course of action after an inquiry," he said.

The complaint states that members of Rashtra Sanglap came across several social media posts and videos featuring the accused while they were at Hadi Chattar in Shahbagh at around 4:00pm on July 3.

Following discussions among the organisation's members, they decided to file a written complaint with the police.

The complainant has requested the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the allegations and take appropriate legal action against those found responsible.
