‘Fully automated traffic case system to be introduced in Dhaka within six months’

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has expressed optimism that a fully automated traffic violation case management system will be introduced on the streets of Dhaka within the next six months.

Once implemented, manual case filing by traffic sergeants and inspectors will largely become unnecessary, as violations of the Motor Vehicles Act will be automatically detected and recorded, said DMP Acting Commissioner Mohammad Sarwar.

He made the remarks on Monday while inaugurating a solar-powered traffic signal at Airport Crossing.

The DMP commissioner said that city corporations have recently installed traffic signal lights at seven intersections from Jahangir Gate to InterContinental. Gulshan-1 already had functioning signals, while Gulshan-2 has also received new installations by the city corporation.

Additionally, Dhaka South City Corporation is installing signal lights at six locations from High Court crossing to InterContinental crossing, which are expected to become operational within a few days. DMP itself has installed traffic signal lights at 15 locations across the city.

He further stated that AI-powered cameras have already been installed at 30 points in Dhaka. Using specialized software, digital or automated cases against traffic violations have already begun. The system detects violations and generates short video evidence within seconds. Through integration with the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) database, vehicle owners’ addresses are identified and prosecution notices are sent directly to their homes.

He added that within a few weeks, case information will also be delivered via mobile applications or SMS, allowing offenders to pay fines digitally. AI-based CCTV cameras will gradually be installed on signal poles at major intersections across the city.

Responding to a query, he said that around 300 cases were filed in the past week using the new system, and in the future, the number could rise to approximately 1,000 cases per day.

He also noted that the installation of surveillance cameras on the Elevated Expressway has helped reduce instances of overspeeding. Following this model, cameras will also be installed on the 300-foot Purbachal Expressway for digital monitoring and enforcement.
To ease traffic pressure on the Kuril Bishwa Road area, a new connecting road is being opened from the 300-foot area through United Group, Swadesh Valley, and Aftabnagar, he added.
